Each Chain Bijoux creation is made by one person. Often the piece of chainmail jewelry begins its life as a spool of plated copper wire, coiled on a mandrel and then cut into jump rings with a jeweller's saw.
Then the weaving begins. Chain mail weaving is an ancient art and its original purpose was mainly body armour. Nowadays the skills are still practiced and find more modern uses. Jewellery-making is popular method of repurposing ancient chain mail weaves.
Each jump ring is linked to others in a particular pattern to create a chain or sheet, depending on the weave. Individual chains can also be linked together to create chainmail sheets, which then become wide bracelets or chokers; whatever the jewellery-maker has in mind.
All Chain Bijoux creations are finished to a high standard. Information on materials used and sizing is supplied with each Etsy marketplace listing so that the buyer has all the information they need before making a purchase.
The Weaves
There are many chainmail weaves available for jewellery-making. Although an ancient art, even today there are skilled artisans who create new weaves and chainmail designs.
Chain Bijoux uses a variety of chainmail weaves when making the jewellery pieces, as can be seen in the photo gallery.
European 4 in 1 Weave: perhaps the most popular of the chainmail weaves, it offer endless possibilities for creativity in jewellery design.
Byzantine Weave: an excellent weave to use in combination with other weaves, it is a dense weave that is extremely eye-catching, especially the sheet weave version.
Barrel Weave: an unusual weave, it is formed in individual units. Barrel Weave's versatility can offer both an antique and modern look.
Jens Pind Linkage Weave: a beautiful rope-effect chain weave that can be finely made or chunky, depending on the size of wire. It is ideal for combining with jewellery charms and offers endless possibilities.
Kingsmaille Weave: this is a variation of the European 4 in 1 weave, 'kinged' because it doubles the E4in1 design, creating a denser weave.
Sweet Pea Weave: perfect for two-tone jewellery designs and using in combination with ornate clasps and jewellery charms.
Half Persian 3 in 1 Weave: when woven into a sheet it creates a beautifully chunky design, perfect for collars and cuff bracelets.
Half Persian 4 in 1 Weave: a heavier version of the HP3in1 weave, it creates a beautiful, densely woven chain.
Full Persian 6 in 1 Weave: a beautiful rounded chain, this extremely dense weave can have a semi-rigid structure.
